Conditions were about the same last night as they were the previous night, at least overall. The seeing was generally somewhat worse (lots of “ballooning” of the planet). When you see that, resist the temptation to chase a new focus. Chances are that the focus didn’t change much, if at all, and when the seeing settles you won’t be starting from an out of focus shot. I know that the axiomatic keywords for planetary imaging are seeing, focus, and collimation. I’d add patience to that list as well, as I’ve experienced many nights of generally horrible seeing that settled into brief moments of fairly good seeing. The image below was captured in such a moment, as it belies how shakey the skies were last night. The high speed camera helps too. This was taken at about 150fps in each channel.
